Announcing this year’s Terry Fox Run
16th Charity Race – Terry Fox Run on 20th September
Zagreb, 10th September 2015
The annual charity race, Terry Fox Run, co-organized by the MPG Agency, the Embassy of Canada in cooperation with the Croatian League against Cancer, Zagreb Holding, Esplanade Zagreb Hotel and the Media Val agency, will be held on Sunday, 20th September at Zagreb’s Jarun Lake.
Sponsorship of the Terry Fox Run has been generously accepted by the President of the Republic of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and equally the Mayor of Zagreb, Milan Bandic.
The goal of this praiseworthy campaign is to raise funds for cancer research in Croatia and to increase public awareness about the disease. Since it was initially launched in 2000, the charity race at the Jarun Lake has gathered more than 75,000 participants, who with the race donors and sponsors have successfully contributed in collecting 4.9 million kuna. The organizers truly hope that this year, the help from the wider public getting involved in the campaign, will help hit this year’s target and exceed the total amount of 5 million kuna collected overall as the charity race moves into its 16th celebratory year in Croatia.
The entire amount collected during the framework of this year’s anniversary campaign will be donated to the Rudjer Boskovic Institute, for research which aims to explore the best combination of chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of malignant tumours.
Funds raised during last year’s Terry Fox Run campaign have been used for scientific research of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. In addition to participating at the Jarun Lake, as in previous years, the public will equally be able to contribute to this worthwhile campaign by purchasing a Terry Fox Run T-shirt for the symbolic price of 50 kuna.
These will be on sale on Saturday 12th September from 11:00 in front of the Charlie café, Bogoviceva Street, joined by a number of celebrities. The T-shirts have once again been provided by the Cemex company, one of the partners of this year’s celebratory campaign.
The Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Croatia, Louise LaRocque shared her thoughts: “Given that my mandate in Croatia is soon coming to an end, this is my last official event in the role of Ambassador of Canada in Croatia. I cannot imagine a better way to conclude my service than providing support to this excellent event. I’d also like to use this opportunity to thank all partners and the team of volunteers who help in putting this event together year after year.”
The central event of this campaign is the race at the Jarun Lake on Sunday, 20th September 2015 which is fully open to the public including jogging, walking, roller-blading and cycling – and also donating for a Terry Fox Run T-shirt.
###
Each year, the charity race Terry Fox Run is set up in honour of a young man Terry Fox, who, due to cancer, lost his leg. In 1980, to raise money for his treatment, he went running in Canada, which he called the “Marathon of Hope”. He ran for a total of 143 days, 42 kilometres a day. Unfortunately, Terry failed to finish the race due to the disease which sadly returned, taking his life at the age of just 22. In full honour of brave Terry, his family decided to continue the tradition and set up a campaign raising money for the fight against cancer, which is held every year in cities across Canada. Equally, the race is organized by Canadian embassies in 67 countries worldwide, including Croatia.
